“As a Speech-Language Pathologist, I am using my professional knowledge and platform to advocate for literacy instruction that is aligned with the science of reading, so we can better help all children learn to read and write.”

About Brianna

I’m a private practice Speech-Language Pathologist in Ontario, Canada. I provide virtual speech therapy sessions, primarily in the areas of literacy, language, and articulation, to residents of Ontario. When I'm not in a session, I'm creating and sharing literacy resources for busy educators, so they can not only teach students to read, but help foster a love of reading.

I struggled with learning to read as a child, so my passion for helping children learn to read is fueled by my own personal experiences. The first books I remember finally enjoying were the Junie B. Jones series by Barbra Park. I have fond memories of my mom and me taking turns reading the pages. I went on to develop a love for reading, and a passion for helping others learn to read by working as a tutor in high school and university.

I am a total nerd who loves school and learning (I still regularly take continuing education courses). I received my Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry with a minor in Psychology from the University of Guelph, and my Master of Health Science in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Toronto.

The educational background of SLPs gives us a unique perspective when it comes to literacy, which is, after all, written language. SLPs have the knowledge and skills to address all communication, speech, language, and literacy needs — it’s all connected!

My passion for literacy also led me to become a Teachers Pay Teachers Author. I love creating resources that are aligned with the science of reading, low prep for busy educators, and fun for students. If you are looking for engaging literacy resources and new activity ideas, you’re in the right place.

If I’m not working, I’m probably doing one of the following: yoga, reading, learning Italian on Duolingo, baking, watching Netflix, playing video/board games, exploring nature, or spending time with wonderful family and friends.

About SLP Literacy Corner

  • ROOTED IN THE SCIENCE OF READING

The science of reading (SOR) is the collection of research from multiple disciplines (e.g., psychology, neuroscience, education) that provides scientific evidence for how children learn to read and write, and how to best support literacy development for all readers. The resources I create and activity ideas I share are aligned with the current evidence about literacy development.

  • LOW PREP FOR BUSY EDUCATORS

All educators are busy! This is why I share low-prep resources and activity ideas. Most of my resources are purposefully created to be print-and-go or used digitally, and work well for both one-on-one or group literacy lessons. This offers busy educators flexibility with lesson formats and reduces prep/planning time, so you can spend less time planning, and more time enjoying your literacy lessons.

  • LITERACY RESOURCES FOR ALL AGES

As a private practice SLP, I work with students from preschool to high school age. One of my struggles has been finding age-appropriate materials for older students who still need to work on foundational skills. This motivated me to create resources that are engaging and age-appropriate for a range of students. I want you to have high-quality resources and activities to use with all your students.
