  2. Read/Watch: From Seed to Pumpkin by Wendy Pfeffer on Bobby’s Backyard YouTube channel (nonfiction read aloud), or Pumpkin Time! on ReadWorks (nonfiction text, grade 1-2).

  3. Activity: Students use pictures or a graphic organizer to retell the pumpkin life cycle orally or in writing using transition words such as first, next, then, and finally.

Topic: Pumpkin Facts & Features

Focus: Learning more about pumpkins and building vocabulary

  1. Watch: Why are pumpkins orange? on Mystery Science YouTube channel, or Parts of a Pumpkin for Kids - Fall Learning - Pumpkin Fun Facts on Lil' Sprouts Kindergarten Prep YouTube channel.

  2. Read: Pumpkin Article on Britannica Kids.

  3. Activities: Complete a pumpkin parts labelling activity and describe each part using adjectives and/or functions (e.g., This pumpkin skin is smooth and orange. The flat seeds are inside the pumpkin.). Create a pumpkin fact file by finding and record interesting facts, then turn their facts into complete sentences or a short nonfiction paragraph.

Topic: Pumpkin Patch & Fall Experiences

Focus: Sequencing and describing an experience

  1. Watch: Let's Visit A Pumpkin Patch! | Caitie's Classroom Field Trips | Learn How To Make A Jack O'Lantern on Super Simple Play with Caitie! YouTube channel, or Virtual Field Trip: Pumpkins through Schuster's Farm.

Topic: Describing Pumpkins

Focus: Describing, comparing & contrasting, and building vocabulary

  1. Watch: Why are pumpkins so popular every fall? on Mystery Science YouTube channel, or A Pumpkin Grows | STEM for Kids on Scholastic YouTube channel.

  2. Read: Pumpkin Problems Poem on Kenn Nesbitt’s Poetry4kids.com

  3. Activity: Students use the video(s) and poem to identify and describe pumpkin features. Create a pumpkin description using categories such as colour, size, shape, parts, and texture. Then have students compare & contrast two pumpkins (real or images) using words like both, different, larger, smaller, smooth, and bumpy.
